Ogun: Police Arrest Beninoise Robbers

A cross-border armed robber, 17-year-old Beninoise
Wilben Kende, has been arrested by the men of the
Ogun State Police Command.

The police said Kende, whose accomplice, Woti Usa, was still at large, specialised in snatching motorcycles from their owners in the Owode area. He was said to have been arrested on November 5, at the Oke Irinja area, Owode Yewa, after snatching a motorcycle from one Gbadebo Taiwo, a commercial okada rider, at gunpoint.

It was learnt that Taiwo was hired by Kende and his accomplice to take them to Ago Baba, but on the way he (Kende) deliberately dropped off one of his slippers.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna
Okoye, Kende then told Taiwo to stop.

“It was at this point he brought a loaded locally-made
pistol and pointed it at Taiwo and snatched his
motorcycle,” he added.

While being paraded on Monday, Kende confessed to
the crime, but said the pistol found on him belonged
to his accomplice. Also arrested by the police were two friends, Fidelis Sunday and Okechukwu Ibie, who were alleged to have robbed one Eghosa Omofonmuvan, a driver of a DAF truck loaded with electronics heading for
Onitsha at the J4 area of Benin-Shagamu Expressway,
Ogbere and diverted goods worth N3.1m to other
places.

Sunday and Ibie denied robbing anyone, but however
could not say what they had gone to do at the Ogbere
area. The fourth suspect that was paraded was one Afolabi
Hassan, a dismissed captain from the army. He was arrested for impersonation.

Okoye added that as the 2015 general elections were
fast approaching, the command would not tolerate any form breach of peace or criminality. He urged politicians, groups or individuals who were in possession of illegal arms and ammunition to come forward and turn them in to the police within 14 days or face the wrath of the law.

The police boss also warned those who drive
unregistered cars or ride unregistered motorcycles
to desist from such.

2015 Elections: Speaker House Of Rep Suspends Presidential Bid

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday bowed to pressure and opted out of the race for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress.

The Speaker made his decision public in a statement
he signed and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
Tambuwal said the decision to suspend his bid was
taken after due consultations and considerations of
the overall interest of the party.

The Speaker, however, stressed that he had what it
takes to be the President of the country.
This, he said, led him to embark on extensive
consultations towards taking a decision as to whether
or not to participate not to actualise a personal
ambition, but rather to actualise “our dream for a
new Nigeria.”

The statement partly read, “Having consulted widely,
taking into consideration the concerns of some
elders of the party, I have decided to suspend my
participation in the presidential contest for now.
“I have done so as a sacrifice for the cohesion and
unity of the APC. I am suspending my participation in
the presidential race for now, because I do not have
any inordinate ambition to occupy any office. Nigeria
is a country too great to sacrifice on the altar of
partisan politics and personal ambition. What anyone
becomes in life is exclusively in the hands of God.
Only God gives power to whoever He pleases.”

He noted that since the news of the possibility of his
participation in the presidential contest got into the
public domain, it had generated monumental
interest, analyses and commentary.

Although he made no direct reference to his next
political move, Tambuwal said, “I am overwhelmed
by the outpouring of support and interest. On my
part and with the greatest sense of modesty and
responsibility, I wish to assure Nigerians that I am
fully prepared, ready, willing, determined, available
and armed with the requisite plans, programmes and
ability, to undertake the great mission of rescuing
our dear country from the clutches of
institutionalised corruption, gross incompetence,
greed and divisiveness.
“I am prepared for the great task of rescuing Nigeria
from the security problems, the scandalous youth
unemployment, and the economic and social malaise
that plague her.”

He expressed confidence that when given
the chance, an APC government would operate a
clean, corruption-free, competent and purposeful
government to deal with the inexplicable paradoxes
that had held the nation hostage for over 100 years.

“I have carefully considered the concerns expressed
by some of our leaders, whom I deeply respect and
whose support and counsel I enjoy, to the effect that
my entry into the presidential race at this point may
necessitate having to rework some equations on the
political chessboard of the party,” he said.

Breaking: Suicide Bomber Burnt Alive In Gombe

The man was said to have arrived the Gombe
Line Motor Park at about 1pm today, November
18, with a sack which he dropped after refusing
to be searched by the personnel at the gate.

A man suspected to be a suicide bomber has been
set ablaze by an angry mob in Gombe State.
The man was said to have arrived the Gombe Line
Motor Park at about 1pm today, November 18, with
a sack which he dropped after refusing to be
searched by the personnel at the gate.
He then supposedly made an attempt to run away
from the scene but was accosted by the mob.

Another report has it that he was about to blow
himself up when he was spotted. The crowd then threw tyres and poured petrol on him before setting him ablaze.
A witness told The Cable:
“One guy entered with a bomb and as he was trying to connect the bomb, people saw him and got hold of him.”

"The police came to arrest him and they were going to
take him to the station but the people insisted that they were going to kill him so they gathered tyres and burnt him alive,” the witness added.

The park was also the scene of an October 31 bombing which reportedly claimed 30 lives and left many people injured. Police officers have reportedly taken the bomb away from the scene after one of the youths in the area
took it out of the park and onto the main road.
