The Lagos State Government has expressed the need to check
activities of hoodlums, including areas boys, in order to ensure
security, especially during the elections.
The Commissioner for Rural development, Cornelius Ojelabi, at a
meeting with Divisional Police Officers and leadership of Community
Development Associations in the state, said strategies must be put
in place to protect lives and property at the grass roots.
Over 50 DPOs, CDA officials, Community Development Committee
executives, and members of the state grass roots security unit,
Neighbourhood Watch, were present at the meeting.
Ojelabi urged members of the CDAs and all citizens of the state to
work with the police to curtail the excesses of hoodlums,
particularly during the elections.
He said, “When everybody plays their part and cooperate with the
security agencies, then we can overcome the security challenges in
the country.”
The commissioner said the meeting provided an avenue for the
CDAs to interface with the DPOs on how to police the state better.
He added that the police and other security agencies needed
information on miscreants and perpetrators of evil in communities
to prevent crime.
Ojelabi said, “The moment you are not ready to play your part, the
area boys will continue to terrorise us. You have to expose the bad
elements in your community since they live among you and you
know their hideouts.”
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Maj. Babatunde Panox,
said he invited the DPOs to deliberate with the CDAs and members
of the NW since they would eventually relate with one another in
their respective communities
